Classic Scenario Where Wedding Insurance Canada was Needed

September 4th, 2010 by weddinginsurance

So I was at a wedding last weekend and saw a classic case where wedding insurance could have been used.

The wedding was in a small town in Ontario and the couple decided to use a local florist for the wedding. Not a bad idea right? Yes, 99% of the time that would be fine, however, not in this case. So what ended up happening was that the family had been doing very well through the years as the husband worked in financial services and his wife ran flower shop. Well I guess the husband got in trouble financially over the past few years and ended up borrowing more money then he should have. He couldn’t keep up with the payments and the family ended up declaring bankruptcy, losing their house, and the flower shop. So the wedding couple’s deposit along with numerous others in the same situation was gone and there was nothing they can do. To add insult to injury, not only is the deposit gone, but they had no flowers for the wedding!

Brides on the best of days can be slightly emotional, but after hearing the story, this poor bride lost it, but again there wasn’t enough time to do anything. So the wedding went ahead without any flowers. Not the worst thing in the world everything considered, but still, if they had had wedding insurance, they could have at least recovered their deposit through that coverage.

You can see some examples of what is covered by wedding insurance here.

What is Wedding Insurance?

August 8th, 2010 by weddinginsurance

Wedding Insurance is exactly what it sounds like – an insurance policy (there really is insurance for everything!) that covers your nuptials and  protects you financially in case anything should happen. Wedding insurance policies are a great idea and they are very  inexpensive as a basic policy that provides a decent amount of coverage would cost  from $125 to $500.

This can help you have peace of mind – and a happy bride and groom to be can be priceless.  Wedding insurance makes for a great wedding present too.

Is Wedding Insurance the Right Choice For You?

Along with everything else the average wedding cost is also going up and is now around $27,000, and as a result, wedding insurance becomes more and more of a necessity. After all, you wouldn’t buy anything else such as a  new car or boat that cost that much without insuring it against damage. Needless to say its typically one of the biggest day’s of people’s lives and you may as well protect it.   If you are having a less expensive event, or are a risk taking couple, perhaps you’ll decide to skip the insurance and take the chance.

Keep in mind that there are a range of policies available and  you can get a less expensive policy that will  cover less things  and also get them tailor made to a specific  part of the event that you’re concerned about –  for example if you worried about your luggage being lost by the airline if you’re having a wedding out of the country, such as the caribbean.

What Does Wedding Insurance Covers:

As with all types of insurance , be sure to read the fine print, but most policies will cover things such as:

  • Bad weather If the wedding ceremony and party has to be postponed or cancelled because of rain or other bad weather, your policy should cover the cost of rescheduling.
  • Injury If  people that are deemed to be very important to the wedding including the bride, groom, wedding party and parents get sick or are injured and the wedding has to be postponed or cancelled, most policies will cover these events
  • A Missing Priest If the priest, minister or other celebrant can’t make it, you can recoup some of your costs
  • Missing vendors This is a biggie, as you could be out of pocket if your florist or caterer goes out of business, you can get your money back and possibly claim back costs if you have to do everything over again.
  • Honeymoon Protect yourself against having to cancel your trip due to illness, bad weather or other unfortunate circumstances.

Typically things like cancelling the wedding due to cold feet aren’t covered.

So be sure to look at all these items before considering whether wedding insurance is for you.

A Guide to Wedding Insurance in Canada

July 29th, 2010 by weddinginsurance

Wedding insurance is like taking out any other type of insurance, great if you need it, but you always think twice about the cost when buying it. Chances are that you will not have to use it, but there is always the big ‘if’, if I need it, I’ll be sooo mad I didn’t buy it. If you decide not to gamble and save some money then of course you have the worry that something may happen and if it does, of possibly suffering disaster financially. If you are considering buying wedding insurance coverage in Canada, be sure to check what’s being covered.

The first thing you need to look at is the type of insurance you think you’ll need. Usually you have the option of choosing between cover in Canada, overseas wedding cover or insurance for a civil partnership. Not all insurance companies may offer different forms of insurance so it can pay to shop around and compare what is on offer.

As the name suggests Canadian wedding insurance covers any wedding in Canada and only in the country. A policy may typically cover many different events and the benefits given in a policy may differ between insurance providers. Some may offer more benefits than others for the same money or very little difference in premiums, and this can work greatly to your benefit. Typically the average wedding policy in Canada may cover, cancellation of the wedding, any deposits you may have paid, car hire, wedding outfits, photographer, your rings, flowers and venue.

If you are holding a wedding overseas then you’ll need to look at a different policy to ensure you have the correct coverage as you typically need to protect against the same events as in Canada, but also additional coverage for the international location. If you’re going to the Caribbean you may, for instance, want hurricane damage coverage. You may be having a wedding on the beach in a romantic location with just the immediate family members, while also having a Canadian celebration for other family members. Some wedding insurance insurance providers may offer free protection for your local party when you take out overseas wedding insurance.

Whichever type of Canadian wedding insurance you choose to take out it is important to look at the small print of the insurance before rushing into buying. Again, as with all insurance there are very particular exclusions or limitations and it’s best to know them ahead of time just to be safe. There is also typically a certain amount of excess that you have to pay when making a successful claim. The excess may vary between providers, so be sure to check this as well. Always ensure that you compare this when comparing the benefits and the cost of the insurance. Also make sure to take note that when buying your wedding insurance policy, the event will be covered up to a maximum amount and this too may vary depending on the insurance policy you decide to go with.
